Colin Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer
Colin founded America SCORES Bay Area in 2001 and has served as Executive Director since its inception. Colin has more than 17 years of experience in non-profit leadership, fundraising, and management. Colin’s passion is to create more enrichment opportunities for all children in the Bay Area and to help address the preventable problems of illiteracy, poor health, and apathy. Colin has a strong track record growing mission-driven organizations that leverage collaboration and build community. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Claremont McKenna College and served as Student Body President. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from UC Berkeley. He is an author of several books on coaching and was awarded the “Premier National Diploma” from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Emily Queliza, Director of Public Affairs
Emily joined the America SCORES Bay Area team in 2004 as a writing coach for the El Dorado Girls Team in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley. She has enjoyed her passion of working in youth development and fundraising over 12 years and has been instrumental in developing strategic partnerships with key city agencies including the San Francisco Unified School District, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and City Fields Foundation. Before coming to America SCORES, Emily worked for 10 years in traditional and online advertising. She successfully managed broadcast and online activity with a roster of clients that included General Motors, Nestle, Levi Strauss and 20th Century Fox. Born in New York City and a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a degree in International Business & Marketing, Emily enjoys traveling and choreographing musical theatre to high school students.
Eva Gabel Sippola, Chief Development Officer
Eva became involved with America SCORES as an event volunteer in 2003. She has more than a decade of experience in youth development, having worked with young people in San Francisco, New York, Washington DC and Edinburgh, Scotland. Eva has managed development and communications programs for various non-profit organizations, including Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers; she has also conducted community-based research at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Eva earned a Bachelor of Arts from George Washington University and a Masters in Public Health in Community Health Education from San Francisco State University. She also brings a love of sports to her work, having spent her childhood playing soccer and lacrosse, and rowing down the Potomac River as a member of the crew team in college. Eva can be found practicing samba at Zumba and jogging in Golden Gate Park.
Angela Bailey, Director of Marin Partnerships
A Bay Area native, Angela began her tenure with America SCORES Bay Area in 2005 as a volunteer. Since then she has worked for America SCORES as a Coach, a Soccer Director, a Program Director and is now using her experience to increase awareness and raise funds for the program. She lives in Marin with her family, where she grew up and received her MBA from Sonoma State University. While completing her undergraduate degree in Economics at Humboldt State University, she lived in China, Mexico and Alaska. After spending time with her six year old, Navah, her favorite pastimes are playing soccer, traveling and socializing!
Roberto Gil, Middle School Program Director
Originally from El Salvador, Roberto is the America SCORES resident soccer specialist who shares his worldly knowledge, expertise and passion for the game. He started working with America SCORES as a soccer coach in 2003 and since then has been instrumental in helping build a strong America SCORES program and soccer community in the Bay Area. Roberto has a D-License from the US Youth Soccer Federation, an Associate in Arts degree from San Francisco City College, a bachelors degree in Physical Education with a minor in Athletic Coaching from San Francisco State University, and a Cal State East Bay graduate degree in Social Work. Since 2005, Roberto has returned to El Salvador every August, with a crew of committed volunteers to run a summer SCORES program for youth in the mountain town of Las Minas. Recently recognized for his continued contributions to local and international youth through sport and creative expression, Roberto was selected as the San Jose Earthquakes’ 2015 Community MVP. When Roberto is not playing soccer, you can find him playing chess or dancing salsa.
Yuri Morales, Chief Program Officer
Yuri has an impressive background as a soccer player, coach, and administrator. He played NCAA Division I soccer at the University of Massachusetts, where he studied Sport Management. Yuri went on to play professionally in Brazil and Denmark, and he is currently a member of the US Beach Soccer National Team. Before joining the America SCORES staff, he worked for the San Jose Earthquakes in sales and community development. Coach Yuri holds a USSF ‘C’ Coaching License and a Master of Education from UC Berkeley where he researched Cultural Studies of Sport in Education. Yuri is also Director of the SCORES Cup Corporate Soccer Tournaments and Beach Soccer Blast Tournaments. When he is not coaching or managing America SCORES programs, you might see him doing bicycle kicks on the beach.
Genaro Jr. Arana, Program Director, San Francisco & Redwood City
Genaro is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico but was raised in Modesto, CA. He is an avid soccer player and a huge supporter of Real Madrid CF. He graduated from Modesto Junior College with an Associate’s degree in Transfer Studies. Genaro is currently attending San Francisco State University and is working on obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Criminology. He has been working with youth programs for the past seven years and hopes that his career will help him be a youth counselor in the future.
Genki Watanabe, Civic Center Program Director
Born and raised in California, Genki Watanabe has been coaching soccer for the past nine years, two of which have been with America SCORES Bay Area coaching Jr SCORES at Cleveland Elementary. He is a recent graduate from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Communication Studies and is excited to be with America SCORES Bay Area. Genki runs the Civic Center SCORES Program bringing schools together for soccer, poetry, and community leadership in the Tenderloin. In his free time, he enjoys activities such as cooking, eating, beatboxing, snowboarding, and making lists.
Leah Morales, Program Manager, Oakland & San Rafael
Leah grew up playing and coaching soccer in Santa Cruz, CA. While enjoying a successful college soccer career at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo she earned a BA in Philosophy. After graduation, she continued her playing career as a professional in Norway and Denmark gaining experience at top European clubs. She played for the Bay Area Breeze from 2012 to 2014 and with the East Bay Spurs in the Women’s Premier Soccer League she lead the team to the 2015 Western Regional Championship. Leah is currently the #1 ranked Footvolley player in the US. She represented Team USA at the Rio 2016 Footvolley World Tournament and she thrives competing and training with her Footvolley community in Berkeley. Leah oversees America SCORES programs in Oakland and San Rafael. She loves working with kids and is passionate about soccer. She looks forward to sharing that passion with America SCORES Poet-Athletes and helping them learn though enjoyment.
Edgar Alvarez, Program Manager
A San Francisco native, Edgar Alvarez is a 7 year veteran SCORES soccer and poetry coach. Edgar has been coaching soccer for 10 years and he’s proud of being able to give back to his community. At the age of 17, Edgar went to Mexico to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a professional soccer player for his favorite team Chivas de Guadalajara. He comes from a large family and is extremely family oriented. Edgar is ambitious to make a difference in his community by keeping kids out of trouble and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
