Field of Dreams
Turning Asphalt to Turf: Our vision for San Francisco is for all children to have access to high-quality sports and enrichment programs and safe places to play regardless of families’ income levels. Working with stakeholders at all levels, America SCORES Bay Area is on a path to install dozens of new soccer fields on asphalt playgrounds. This citywide urban transformation will benefit more than 10,000 low-income youth. To date, eight turf fields have been installed at partnering school sites to date.
The sad reality is that children in low-income public schools spend most of their recreation time on unsafe and unsightly asphalt playgrounds. Skinned knees and injuries are all too common. And many children, particularly girls, rarely participate at all. The good news is that we have a solution that can turn this grey reality into a field of dreams. For less than $10 a square foot, we can turn the page on unsafe asphalt playgrounds.
