Ways To Volunteer

At DC SCORES, our goal is to provide DC youth with activities that instill self expression, physical fitness, and a sense of community. These services would be impossible without the help of energetic volunteers who are committed to making a difference in the community.

Looking to get involved? There is a volunteer role at DC SCORES for everyone!

  • Soccer Referees are needed for games each Thursday during the fall season (September-November) for elementary school game days.
  • Special Events Volunteers join in on various weekends/late weeknights when we host large events for our students and community.
  • Summer Camp Counselor – high school and college students can help in a variety of ways at one of DC SCORES’ multiple summer camps!
  • Corporate/Group Volunteers are encouraged to help at one of our special events or contact Chloe Doto to discuss other opportunities.
  • Other – Are you a skilled Photographer/Videographer? Graphic Design expert? Local artist? Own a restaurant?  By donating your skills or services, it allows DC SCORES to put more funds toward our program and serving the youth of DC.

Soccer Referee

Being a DC SCORES referee is the perfect commitment for someone looking to volunteer every week or simply a few times a season.

      • Time: 3:45-6pm, Thursdays (Elementary)
      • Where: At our sites throughout DC.  We will do our best to place you based on your location and mode of transportation, though our greatest need is in Wards 7 & 8.
      • Tasks: DC SCORES’ soccer leagues are recreational and small sided (8v8) with an emphasis on sportsmanship and learning. We ask our referees to show patience and promote a fun learning experience for the players.
A DC SCORES staff member will meet you at the field each game day to provide you with a stopwatch, scorecard, whistle, and support.
      • Commitment: Volunteer referee is our most flexible volunteer position–referee every week or just when you can!
      • Requirements: For elementary school games, no prior refereeing experience, only general knowledge of the game is needed.
We ask referees for our Friday middle school games (in the spring) to be more comfortable calling fouls and offsides. Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age.

Assistant Soccer or Creative Writing Coach

Support a soccer coach leading a practice or writing coach leading a workshop. These sessions consist of a group of 16-32 students and teach the fundamental skills necessary for soccer, poetry, or service-learning.

      • Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week, 1-2 hours after school (between 3-6pm) – days and times depend on school schedule.
The spring season runs from Sept. 6-Nov. 23
      • Where: At our sites throughout DC.
      • Tasks: Help the soccer coach oversee the students and run structured practices to build skills and knowledge of the game. Alternatively, assist the writing coach to teach the fundamentals of poetry (fall season) or design and implement the school service-learning project (spring).
      • Commitment: Consistency is a key aspect to DC SCORES programming. The children who participate look forward to working with mentors who volunteer on a consistent basis at least twice per week.
