NATIONAL SPECIAL EVENTS
GAME DAY- Held every Friday during the Fall and Spring season. Every team from our three elementary schools arrive at Mar Vista Park to play on a turf field against a team from another SCORES site. Players wear their team uniforms and enjoy a weekly field trip that takes them off the black top and allows them to put into play what they have learned at practice. We divide one regulation soccer field into six mini fields to allow for 12 teams to play small sided games. Charnock Elementary walks to the park with their coaches, Palms Elementary takes public transportation and Braddock Dr. is bussed. The kids will always know how many goals they scored and their team’s record but, for staff and coaches, it is important to remember not to emphasize the competitive aspects of the game but rather focus on teamwork, sportsmanship and improvement.
Poetry SLAM!- Main event of the Fall season. Students from all our elementary schools perform their original works of poetry created during the Fall season. Typically hosted at a school site to facilitate attendance of friends and family, the SLAM is the culmination of our fall season and celebrates our students’ work and dedication in the classroom. The event usually consists of: an emcee, a dj, decorations, guest performance, picture slideshow, gift bag and food.
FALL FRENZY-The culminating event of the Fall season focusing on the soccer aspect of the program. Typically takes place on the last Friday of the program. Consists of playing soccer outside the normal one game against one team format; teams can play round robin, schools v. schools, girls v. boys etc… After the soccer game we give the players a gift, usually a Hunt 4 Soccer soccer ball.
National Poetry SLAM- A national fundraising event in which two students from each SCORES site across the country is selected for a trip to perform an original poem at a New York City event. Preparation for this event begins in January with the auditioning of students and continues through selection and student preparation. The students must be one boy and one girl accompanied by one adult chaperone. Students are given the opportunity to tour New York City sites, meet other SCORES students from across the country and perform in a great venue and event.
SHOUT!- A spring season event that showcases the community projects created by the students. Is sometimes combined with the Jamboree. Incorporate displaying of any materials made, pictures and gives the students an opportunity to tell friends, families and supporters about their project.
Jamboree- The year end event celebrating the work of our students, coaches, volunteers and families. Held near the end of our Spring season, it has a festival like atmosphere with bounce houses, face painters, dunks tanks, soccer, food and special guests. Since it is a large event, it can be chaotic, so coaches and volunteers play a large role in keeping track of kids. Gift bags are given to students at the end of the event as well.
Corporate Cup- A yearly fundraising event where supporters of our program sponsor a team to play in a day long soccer tournament, against other community organizations and corporations. The last few years it has been held at the Home Depot Center. The day consists of a round robin, semi-finals and finals in two divisions. Lunch is also provided during the tournament. It is an all day event that garners a lot of support. Our hopes are to increase the number of teams that participate and more efficiently utilize player contact information for future support.
Inspired Art- A silent art auction fundraiser in which local artists donate pieces that were created using a SCORES poem as inspiration. The event started in the Bay Area and was taken on by various sites across the country including Cleveland, Milwaukee, Chicago and Denver. Our first Inspired Art LA was in April 2011 and was held at the Bank of America Plaza in Downtown LA.
LA SPECIFIC SPECIAL EVENTS
EA LA DAY- An event for our Middle School students, where we take them on a day long field trip to the EA Games studio. EA has been a great supporter of our program and opens its doors to us once a year for this unique experience. We receive a tour of the facilities, get to speak with employees, screen a movie, and play a game of soccer and the company field (weather permitting). Usually takes place during Christmas break, a full day off during the winter season, or during the Spring break.
Summer Camping- Each summer the ASLA staff take a group of high school students camping for 3 days and 3 nights. We have typically stayed at Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura. Camping began when former Program Director Amy, was coaching the girls at Palms Middle School and took a group of 6 girls camping in Santa Barbara.
