Poetry & Literacy

By teaching creative writing, America SCORES New England capitalizes on an extremely influential cultural medium to inspire young writers who are thoughtful about their lives and their surroundings. By challenging our poet-athletes to ask questions about themselves through creative writing, America SCORES New England engages students in discussions about their identities, the power of writing to effect social change, and the relationship between individuals and their community.
During our annual Poetry Slam! and VOICES poetry performances, our poet-athletes experience poetry as literary performance and art form, celebrating their capacity for self-expression by performing their original work for their teammates and family.
On both the local and national level, the America SCORES New England program highlights each poet-athlete’s original written work through various publications. Locally, Learning Kicks: An Anthology of Student Work features one poem from every participant, and SCORES Scoop, a newsletter distributed to families, publishes poet-athlete writing as well.
“Poetry is a form of literature that focuses language’s ability to evoke feelings, ideas, experiences, not just to transmit meaning.”
