Service & Leadership

Our service-learning curriculum challenges poet-athlete teams to identify needs in their community and use their writing skills to create and implement a community service project. For their projects, poet-athletes research an issue in their community, develop a community service project plan, take action to improve the situation, and reflect upon the impact their project made on their school and neighborhood. Poet-athletes write persuasive essays, such as letters to the editor or letters to government officials, to advocate for solutions to these issues in their community.
Student projects include:
- Assisting in a 5K health and wellness walk in East Boston.
- Sponsoring a family moving into a Habitat for Humanity house.
- Interviewing the Mayor of Boston on the issue of homelessness in the city.
- Holding a car wash to raise funds for St. Jude’s Hospital.
- Collecting goods for newly immigrated Cape Verdeans at the Dearborn School.
- Restoring of a soccer field at McCormack Middle School.
