Development and Communications Internship

This is a chance to combine your career interests with a working internship, and to serve thousands of children in under-resourced communities across the nation.  We are currently seeking an inspired candidate to join our national office team as an Intern in the area of Development and Communications from January – May 2012.

Internship Overview

The Development and Communications Intern will be an integral part of a dynamic team.  He or she will be responsible for assisting the development team in driving revenue through fundraising, marketing, event and communications initiatives.  The successful candidate should have some experience in development and/or communications.  Experience and/or interest in youth and/or education-related organizations is preferred.  The ideal internship candidate is self-motivated and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Opportunities for growth exist within the organization.

Responsibilities

I. Fund Development:

  • Research and identify new funding sources
  • Assist Chief Development Officer (CDO) and Development Associate in leveraging America SCORES’ National and affiliate relationships across networks; facilitate collaboration and partnerships
  • Assist in the writing and preparation of foundation grant proposals the design and production of online and print materials for appeal campaigns
  • Assist the development team to provide corporate partner communications including recap information, thank you notes, and any requested multimedia

II. Marketing, Communications and Events:

  • Coordinate website and social media, monitoring and updating digital communications as needed
  • Produce bi-weekly internal and monthly external and board of directors email newsletters, collaborating with staff and using ConstantContact
  • Draft and send press releases; build and expand relationship with media as applicable, and update lists
  • Assist with sponsorship packages, sponsor fulfillment, silent auction planning and additional responsibilities for the America SCORES National Poetry SLAM!, the organization’s marquee fundraising and program event in mid-April 2012, featuring elementary school students from around the country reciting their original poetry on the stage of Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater in New York City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjunoGWmM1A)

Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong desire to work for a youth services non-profit organization with a specific focus on low-income communities
  • Experience in development, marketing and communications
  • Experience working for or a strong desire to work for a non-profit organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player with a passion for youth development
  • Ability to produce high-quality work independently and as part of a team, with flexibility and a positive outlook
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills, including basic design skills; intern will be working with MS Word, PowerPoint, InDesign and web-based applications
  • Ability to multi-task, independently prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-oriented and dynamic organization

Term and Details

This internship is available from January 2012 through May 2012 (and could lead to an ongoing experience for the right candidate).  America SCORES offers a flexible schedule and weekly stipend.  Only candidates who can work at least 15 hours per week will be considered.  America SCORES is centrally located two blocks from Penn Station in NYC.

Event Coordination Intern

This is a chance to combine your career interests with a working internship, and to serve thousands of children in under-resourced communities across the nation.  We are currently seeking an inspired candidate to join our national office team as a part-time Event Coordination Intern from January – May 2012.

Internship Overview

The Event Coordination Intern will play a key part in planning and coordinating both the student experience and show elements of the 6th Annual America SCORES National Poetry SLAM!, the organization’s marquee fundraising and program event in mid-April 2012, featuring elementary school students from around the country reciting their original poetry on the stage of Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater in New York City.  Additionally, the intern will support the needs of the event week, and will become a central point of contact for the event.  The ideal candidate is self-motivated and possesses excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills and basic design skills, as well as an interest in event planning and youth development work.  The intern will be supervised by an experienced management team.  Opportunities for growth exist within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate the poet-athlete experience for the annual America SCORES National Poetry SLAM! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjunoGWmM1A)
  • Be an active member of the event production team, including coordinating rehearsals, scripts, rundowns, stage management and show production
  • Serve as a liaison for program staff from around the nationwide network related to event details and the week’s activities, and participate in calls to brief all on the event experience
  • Update and assist in the design of communication and promotional materials, including event program, schedules and e-mail correspondences
  • Coordinate logistics of student and chaperone travel to NYC, and coordinate logistics of student activities within NYC during the days prior to the National Poetry SLAM! (rehearsals, touring, social activities)
  • Assist the national development team with event sponsorship proposals and creative ways to enhance the event and to add value to event partners
  • Assist in planning VIP reception and silent auction elements
  • Assist the COO of America SCORES in venue relations with the Apollo Theater
  • Lead efforts to evaluate the event and compile analysis and key learnings for future programs
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Relevant event management experience, in work and/or academic environments, and an active interest in event operations, coordination, marketing and/or production
  • Dedication to urban youth and belief in the mission and potential of America SCORES
  • Experience working with elementary level youth and/or in an experiential education environment preferred
  • Ability to produce high-quality work independently and as part of a team, with flexibility and a positive outlook
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills, including basic design skills; intern will be working with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and InDesign
  • Ability to multi-task, independently prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-oriented and dynamic organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Design and Marketing Internship

This is a chance to combine your career interests with a working internship, and to serve thousands of children in under-resourced communities across the nation.  We are currently seeking an inspired candidate to join our national office team as an Intern in the area of Design and Marketing for the 2011-2012 school year.

Internship Overview

Reporting to the Development & Marketing Manager of America SCORES, the Design and Marketing Intern will be an integral part of a dynamic team.  He or she will be responsible for assisting the team to design and develop internal and external marketing materials and assist in marketing and communications initiatives.

Experience and/or interest in youth and/or education-related organizations is preferred.  The ideal internship candidate is self-motivated and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage design and printing of event invitations, programs, banners and other collaterals as needed.
  • Collaborating with Development and Marketing Manager and assisting graphic designers with the publication of the annual 30-plus page full-color magazine – KICKER!
  • Creation and/or maintenance of marketing & promotional materials for the National office, which then distributes the collaterals to 13 affiliates around the country, concentrating on the design and creation of marketing and promotional materials and sustainable campaigns, both online and in print (advanced skills in Adobe InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator or Quark preferred).
  • Manage multiple relationships with competence, enthusiasm and a vision for the goals of the organization.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong desire to work for a youth services non-profit organization with a specific focus on low-income communities.
  • 1-3 years experience in graphic design, even if through academic work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team player with a passion for youth development.
  • Excellent Microsoft PowerPoint and Word skills, along with design software mentioned above.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multi-task, independently prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-oriented and dynamic organization.
  • Ability to juggle several competing priorities at once with flexibility and a positive outlook.

Term and Details

This internship is available for the 2011-2012 school year, from August 2011 through May 2012 (and could lead to an on-going/permanent position for the right candidate).  America SCORES offers a flexible schedule and transportation reimbursement.  Further stipends may be available based on relevant experience.  This is a part-time internship scheduled for 5-10 hours per week.  America SCORES is centrally located two blocks from Penn Station in NYC.
